It was a day of one-sided affairs in the ongoing U-19 World Cup as Afghanistan, England and South Africa registered wins. Afghanistan embarrassed Papua New Guinea's (PNG) batting lineup as 'extras' were turned out to be the top-scorer in their innings. While South Africa bounced back from defeat against India with an easy 121-run win against Uganda, England drafted Canada by 106 runs in the other encounter.
Extras top score in PNG's embarrassing defeat
PNG were crushed to a heavy defeat as their top-scorer was extras with 21 runs. The PNG scoreboard reminded of a phone number as 10 batters went for single-digit scores. Chasing a target of 201 runs, an all-round bowling performance from the Afghanistan bowlers saw PNG reduced to just 65, with 21 extra runs they were hardly in the game. Earlier, captain Suliman Safi led from the front to score 62 off 76 deliveries to manage the 200-run mark.
South Africa bounce back after opening day defeat to India
Dewald Brevis has continued his superb form with the bat for South Africa as he scored 104 in 110 deliveries to register the Proteas' first win of the campaign. Earlier, Brevis who has been compared to South African legend AB de Villiers, had scored 65 against India, but that innings ended in a losing cause. Captain George van Heerden also chipped in with 36 runs as South Africa managed to score 231/9 in their 50 overs. In reply, Uganda were nowhere near their opposition, with seven different bowlers picking at least one wicket, they were reduced to just 110 in 33.4 overs. Again it was the extras that paid dividends for Uganda as they were gifted 27 runs by South African bowlers. Issac Ategka was the top-scorer with 29 off 72.
'Captain Fantastic' Tom Prest sees England through
England recorded back-to-back wins in the campaign to seal their way for the next stage, thanks to the all-round performance of captain Tom Prest. The Dorset-born all-rounder missed out on a hundred but returned with the ball to scalp three wickets for 38. With the bat, he scored 93 runs from 93 deliveries to guide England to a total of 320/7. In reply, Anoop Chima (38) and Yasir Mahmood (25) got starts, but no one went on to score a big knock. Tail-ender Gurnek Johal Singh top-scored with 44 off 40 deliveries as the 300-plus target was too much to chase for Canada. The associate nation was bowled out for 214 in 48.1 overs.
