Indian skipper Rohit Sharma became the third quickest opener to score 13,000 runs in international cricket as an opener. Rohit reached the milestone in his 307th innings as an opener. Rohit is only behind Australia’s Matthew Hayden (293 innings) and Sachin Tendulkar (295 innings) and on the list of quickest to 13,000 international runs as an opener.
Rohit is third Indian opener to score 13,000 or more runs in international cricket. Virender Sehwag has scored 15,335 runs whereas Tendulkar has 15,758 runs batting at the position. Overall, he is the 11th opener in world cricket to achieve the feat.
Rohit surpasses Tendulkar
Rohit was attacking from the start in the mammoth run chase of 444 at Kennington Oval, London. His first six of the innings also helped him surpass Tendulkar on other list. Rohit is now third on the list of Indian batters with most sixes in the format. It was Rohit’s 70th six in Test cricket that he hit off Mitchell Starc. The 36-year-old is only behind Sehwag (90) and former skipper MS Dhoni (78) on the list.
Rohit fails to score big again
In the first innings, Rohit scored 15 runs from 26 deliveries. He got out lbw to Pat Cummins as he played across the line. In the run chase, he moved across a lot but did not play across against the new ball until and unless it was bowled short.
In the second innings, he got off to an excellent start and timed the ball well. But Rohit could not convert the start into a big score. In an attempt to sweep Nathan Lyon, he played too early and got trapped in front of the stumps. He opted for DRS but it could not save him. He got out after scoring 43 runs from 60 balls including seven fours and one six.
India are chasing history in WTC final as they need to pull off the highest run chase in Test cricket history to win the title against Pat Cummins-led side.
