Virat Kohli disappointed on Day 5 as he lost his wicket playing a reckless shot off Scott Boland. Despite getting out early and missing his half-century in the mammoth run chase of World Test Championship (WTC) 2023 final, Kohli achieved another are feat in Test cricket. Kohli has now become the fifth Indian batter to score 1,000 or more runs in the fourth innings.
From 27 innings, Kohli has scored 1,038 runs in fourth innings of a Test at an average of 47.18 including two centuries and seven half-centuries. The record for most runs in fourth innings of a Test belongs to legendary Sachin Tendulkar who has 1,625 runs from 60 innings to his name. The other three Indians on the list are Rahul Dravid (1,575 runs), Sunil Gavaskar (1,398 runs) and VVS Laxman (1,095 runs).
Kohli is also the second-highest run-scorer for India in the fourth innings of a Test against Australia. The 34-year-old scored 437 runs from 11 innings at an average of 39.72 including one century and one fifty.
On Day 5, Kohli could add just five runs to his overnight score. He scored 49 runs from 78 deliveries including seven fours. He got out chasing a delivery way outside the off stump against Scott Boland. The ball carried to slip fielder Steve Smith who dived to his right and took a screamer.
Records galore
On Day 4, Kohli completed 5,000 international runs against Australia. He became fourth batter to achieve the double of 2,000-plus runs against Australia in both ODI and Test cricket. Only Tendulkar and West Indies' Viv Richards, Desmond Haynes have achieved the feat before. The former Indian skipper also broke Tendulkar’s record of most runs for India in ICC knockout encounters.
Kohli’s cryptic post
Earlier, after Day 4’s play, Kohli had shared a cryptic Instagram story which was a quote from Vietnamese monk Thich Nhat Hanh that read, "If we have too many worries, fears, and doubts, we have no room for living and loving. We need to practice letting go."
