Australia will be handing two of their star players an ODI debut in the series opener against India. Nearly nine years after his international debut and 14 Test appearances Matt Renshaw, at 29, is finally set to make his One-Day International (ODI) debut against India on October 19 in Perth. His selection is well-deserved, following a period of stellar white-ball form. Most notably, he amassed 248 runs in the three-match series against Sri Lanka A, where the left-hander showcased his fluent best, averaging a staggering 82.66 with a strike rate of 127.17.
Matt Renshaw, Mitchell Owen to make ODI debut in series opener against India
His overall 50-over record is strong, boasting 2794 runs at an average of 41.08. Renshaw isn't the only player making their debut, as Australia will also hand an ODI cap to Mitchell Owen, who impressed selectors earlier this year by smashing a 48-ball century against South Australia. Furthermore, the team will be without both of their first-choice wicketkeepers for the opening ODI, with Josh Inglis and Alex Carey unavailable. This absence has paved the way for Josh Philippe to make a return to the ODI squad.
Adding to the key changes, Matt Short is set to make his comeback to the setup after missing a significant amount of international cricket earlier in the year. He has been confirmed to bat at the crucial No. 3 position for Australia throughout the three-match ODI series against India.
With Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh now established as Australia's white-ball opening pair, Matt Short will shift down the order to seize his opportunity at the No. 3 position. This marks a change for Short, who had previously opened in all ten of his ODI appearances for the national team. Short's return to the squad follows a period of being sidelined with injuries. He missed Australia's 2-1 series loss to South Africa in August while recovering from a cartilage fracture in his rib. Additionally, he was forced to miss the conclusion of this year's Champions Trophy campaign due to a quad injury. His first action back in the Australian colors since the February tournament came during the T20 tour of New Zealand earlier this month. There, he was also deployed at No. 3, posting scores of 29, 2 not out, and 7 in the series.
