Story Highlights:

Shreyas Iyer got injured in third ODI against Australia.

Shreyas Iyer has been moved out of the ICU.

India middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer remains delicate but stable as he has been moved out of the ICU. Iyer who was India's vice-captain during the ODI series against Australia, rushed back to the hospital in the middle of the game as he got injured while taking a catch.

Cricbuzz reported that the BCCI has assigned the team doctor to monitor him closely, and he is understood to be recovering well. Two days after the fall in the cover region while taking a nearly impossible catch in the third and final ODI against Australia at the SCG, the board stated his injuries.

"Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on October 25, 2025. He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation.

"Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian Team Doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress."

How and when Shreyas Iyer got injured in Australia?

The incident happened on the fifth ball of the 34th over, bowled by Harshit Rana, who bowled a short of length outside off delivery, and  Alex Carey throws his arms at it (probably trying to go over mid-off/extra cover) and ends up slicing it a long way up in the air. Shreyas turns around and runs back from the backward point, times his jumps perfectly and holds onto it even as the ball slips out a bit. He falls awkwardly to his left side and has injured himself.

Shreyas Iyer out of danger

Cricbuzz further reported that Iyer is out of danger, although he appears to have suffered some internal bleeding from the impact while taking the catch of Alex Carey in Sydney Cricket Stadium in Sydney. He was immediately admitted to a hospital in Sydney, with the travelling Indian team doctor, Dr Rizwan Khan, constantly by his side.

Shreyas Iyer's family to leave for Sydney

Sports Tak earlier reported that his family members will Sydney from Mumbai once the visa formalities are completed. The family was unable to apply over the weekend, delaying the process slightly.

As of Monday, it is not clear when Iyer will return but Cricbuzz stated that all concerned the BCCI, the team management, Iyer, his family and his personal staff - do not want to rush him back and he is expected to stay put in Sydney till he fully recovers. He may remain in hospital for a couple of more days.
