Former India batter Shikhar Dhawan wished a strong and speedy recovery to his former teammate Shreyas Iyer after he got injured in the third ODI against Australia at Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney. Iyer suffered an injury to his lower rib cage while taking a catch.
Dhawan for Iyer injury
Dhawan took his 'X' to share an emotional social media message for his former teammate Iyer who was the ODI vice-captain in his last assignment against Australia.
"Gave it your all for that catch, Shreyas Iyer. Unfortunate to see you pick up that injury. Wishing you a strong and speedy recovery, brother" wrote Dhawan
How did Shreyas Iyer get injured?
The incident happened on the fifth ball of the 34th over, bowled by Harshit Rana, who bowled a short of length outside off delivery, and Alex Carey throws his arms at it (probably trying to go over mid-off/extra cover) and ends up slicing it a long way up in the air. Shreyas turns around and runs back from the backward point, times his jumps perfectly and holds onto it even as the ball slips out a bit. He falls awkwardly to his left side and has injured himself.
BCCI on Shreyas Iyer's injury
“Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on 25th October 2025. He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation,” BCCI said in an official statement.
Iyer is currently in hospital and recovering. Team India doctor will remain in Sydney with the ODI vice-captain until he is declared fit to travel back home.
“Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian Team Doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress,’ the statement added.
Meanwhile, Sports Tak understands that Iyer's parents have applied for a visa on an urgent basis. They will fly to Sydney as soon as possible.
