New Zealand veteran batter Kane Williamson has lauded Rohit Sharma for his cricketing skill by calling him the 'legend of the game'. He reckons that the new ODI captain, Shubman Gill, will benefit from his presence in the upcoming white-ball series against Australia.
While announcing India's squad for the Australia series, BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar shocked everyone after saying that he personally conveyed the management's decision to Rohit about making Gill his successor. Gill's captaincy stint in the ODIs will begin in Australia with a three-match series.
Williamson denied commenting on the reasons behind the decision by the BCCI. He believes his presence will be beneficial for young players on the Australia tour.
"While I'm not familiar with all the details of the decision, being more closely connected to the New Zealand setup, Rohit Sharma is a legend of the game who has achieved incredible things for Indian cricket. I'm confident he has been immensely valuable to the team's players, serving as a great leadership example for India. Shubman and other players have undoubtedly benefited greatly from his influence," Williamson said on the sidelines of the CEAT Cricket Rating Awards in Mumbai as quoted by ANI.
Rohit Sharma's ODI captaincy
Rohit Sharma got ODI captaincy in 2017 and captained India in 56 ODI, winning a stunning 42, losing just 12, with one ending in a no-result and another in a tie. He has an impressive winning percentage is 75.
