Team India suffered a huge blow minutes before the first ODI against Bangladesh on December 04 (Sunday) as star wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant was ruled out of the ODI series. Pant was released following consultation with the BCCI medical team and no replacement was sought. However, Pant will be back for the two-match Test series which will kick off from November 14. In a tweet, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said, "In consultation with the BCCI Medical Team, Rishabh Pant has been released from the ODI squad. He will join the team ahead of the Test series. No replacement has been sought. Axar Patel was not available for selection for the first ODI."
Soon after Pant's name was scratched from India's ODI squad for the Bangladesh series, social media was flooded with fans speculating whether the southpaw suffered an injury or he was dropped from the national side after a string of poor performances.
When quizzed about Pant's status, KL Rahul, who is the vice-captain of the national side and a part of the team management, didn't clarify whether the southpaw was rested because of workload management or an injury.
"When it comes to Rishabh, I am not sure to be honest, just found today, that he is going to be released. What the reasons are, medical team will be in a better situation to answer those questions," Rahul said in the post-match press conference.
Pant has been an abysmal form with the bat in white-ball cricket. For some strange reason, the southpaw has failed to translate his match-winning performances in Test cricket into ODIs and T20Is. The left-handed batter's scores in his last nine innings across the two white-ball formats read 10, 15, 11, 6, 6, 3, 9, 9 and 27.
