The last session of Day 4 was cut-short by bad light and rain. There were two arguments, one in England’s favour and the other in the visitors. The heavy roller was discussed as it would have flattened the conditions. On the other hand, the much-needed rest to Indian pacers meant that they will be running in full steam. The later happened and Siraj was the wrecker-in-chief on Day 5 as he rushed through the lower order to lead India to a six-run win. As Chris Woakes walked out to bat despite a dislocated shoulder, all responsibility was on Gus Atkinson. He got a lifeline when his catch was spilled over the boundary by Akash Deep. But Siraj’s full and straight delivery rattled the stumps and the crowd at The Oval on a Monday morning erupted in jubilation. Head coach Gautam Gambhir did not hide his emotions as well, leading the celebrations in the dressing room.
The BCCI.tv released a video of dressing room celebrations as Siraj got one past Atkinson’s bat and disturbed the timber.
Before the ball was delivered, Gambhir was pacing up and down. Gambhir hugged assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate as Siraj sealed the win. The coaching staff surrounded him as they jumped together in celebration. India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel celebrated as well. Gambhir then jumped and hugged Morkel as India levelled the series 2-2. An emotional Gambhir hugged everyone before stepping on the field to congratulate the team.
He acknowledged the young leader Shubman Gill. His former teammate, Ravindra Jadeja hugged and lifted him and the celebrations continued.
Ashwin’s criticism of Gambhir
Before Day 4, Gambhir copped criticism from former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin who felt that spinners Jadeja and Washington Sundar was underutilised. Ashwin felt that Sundar could have been introduced into the attack when Brook launched the assault. The legendary off-spinner does not expect to see such mistakes made in modern-day cricket.
Gambhir’s altercation before Oval Test
Before the Oval Test, Gambhir was at the centre of controversy as well. He stood up for the support staff when The Oval pitch curator Lee Fortis asked them to step away from the square area. He had a heated altercation with Fortis who is known to be a strange character, especially for the touring teams.
