Gus Atkinson gave an update on Chris Woakes' injury

Woakes had injured his shoulder during the first day of fifth Test against India

England pacer Gus Atkinson provided a big update on teammate Chris Woakes' injury which the latter sustained on the first day of fifth Test against India. During the third session of the day, Woakes tried to prevent Karun Nair from scoring a boundary, however his dive that he put in ended up injuring his shoulder. It looked to be a serious injury and thus, the all-rounder was quickly taken off the field. He was soon replaced by Liam Dawson on the field.

Atkinson, who picked up the wickets of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Dhruv Jurel, revealed that Woakes' injury didn't look quite good and hoped that his teammate could soon make a return to the field. Notably, Woakes had bowled a total of 14 overs during the first day and had picked up the massive wicket of KL Rahul as well.

“I don’t know too much, but it doesn’t look great. It’s the last game of the series, and it’s always a big shame when anyone gets injured. I’m hoping it’s not too serious, and whatever it is, he’ll have everyone’s full support,” Atkinson said at the post-day press-conference.

Atkinson had earlier told the BBC that it will be a surprise if Woakes manages to get back on the field for the rest of the match. “I will be surprised if he takes any further part in the game."

Woakes didn't miss a single game in the series

Woakes is the only England pacer who has featured in all the five Tests against India. The 36-year-old has picked up a total of 11 wickets so far in the assignment and could have increased his tally more if it wasn't for the injury he sustained. It remains to be seen if the all-rounder manages to make a comeback after seriously injuring his shoulder on Day 1.

Meanwhile, India wrapped up the first day on 204/6 with Karun Nair unbeaten on 52 and Washington Sundar batting on 19. The duol have formed a valiant partnership of 51 runs and will be looking to take it further as the action resumes on Friday. England have so far bowled quite well with both Atkinson and Josh Tongue picking up two scalps each and Woakes also chipping in with one. They will be trying to restrict the visitors to as low of a total as they can when they take the field for Day 2.
