One of the areas where Team India underperformed massively during the Headingley Test against England was their fielding. In just England's first innings, the visitors ended up dropping a total of six catches with Yashasvi Jaiswal putting down four out of them. Wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant also dropped a catch each in the first and second innings as the hosts made most out of the Men in Blue's mistakes and eventually went on to win the match by five wickets.
Following the defeat in the first Test, former India cricketer Kiran More pointed that even though the Shubman Gill-led side played well for the first four days, their fielding efforts ended up letting them down.
“We played very well for four days. I think the mistake came on the last day when England played outstanding cricket. Fielding was where we slipped. Those were simple catches — no one drops those — and that made the difference, " More told IANS.
India ended up dropping multiple catches in both the innings
After putting down six catches in the first innings, India went on to drop even more in England's second innings as well with Jaiswal grassing the crucial catch of Ben Duckett, who was batting on 97 at that time. Though the young batter is known to be a sharp fielder, his effort in the field at Headingley was undoubtedly very disappointing. More further stated that the Men in Blue came up short when it mattered the most and it lead to England taking a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
“In the first two days, we were really good, and I felt we could've added another 100–150 runs to our total. If we had scored 450 in the first innings, things might've been different. In the second innings, Rishabh and KL Rahul did well. But again, we collapsed at key moments," More added.
Meanwhile, England completed a brilliant run-chase of 371 on the fifth and final day of the Headingley Test. The catalysts to England's victory were opening batters Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett, who formed an incredible partnership of 188 runs. The former would get dismissed on 65 while the latter went on to play an incredible knock of 149, guiding the Three Lions to a famous victory.
