Former India coach Ravi Shastri is concerned about Jasprit Bumrah's workload after what he witnessed on Day 2 of the first Test of the series at Headingley, Leeds. Shastri wants other bowlers to support Bumrah and put their hands up. Shastri expressed his concern after former England captain Nasser Hussain pointed out how England batters targetted other bowlers. He also pointed out that India would be in a better position if three catches weren't dropped.
"With how unorthodox he is, they could have had more wickets if they had caught well off him," Hussain said on Sky Cricket. "It will be a concern for India the drop off from when Bumrah is bowling to the rest. But it is a small sample size, the others will get into the series."
"I’m really concerned about Bumrah and what his workload will be as the series progresses, because he is the one man who is expected to pick wickets every spell he bowls. I just hope someone at the other end puts their hands up," Shastri said.
On Day 2, Bumrah bowled 13 overs, including two maidens. He got all three wickets. With the new ball, he got rid of Zak Crawley. He would have dismissed Ben Duckett early but his catch was dropped twice, once by Yashasvi Jaiswal and then Ravindra Jadeja. Later, he would have dismissed Ollie Pope but Jaiswal dropped a chance at third slip.
However, Bumrah was relentless in his approach. He knocked over Duckett for 62. Later, he got Joe Root nicked off to Karun Nair in the slip cordon. Root scored 28 runs from 58 deliveries.
How other Indian bowlers fared on Day 2
On the other hand, Shardul Thakur was introduced very late in the day's play. He bowled three overs and conceded 23 runs. Prasidh Krishna was expensive as he went for 56 runs in 10 overs he bowled. Mohammed Siraj was better economically but could not take a wicket either. He bowled 14 overs and conceded 50 runs. Left-arm spinner Jadeja was the most economical of all as he conceded 25 runs from nine overs, including two overs. But, Jadeja could not get the breakthrough either.
