Gill has broken Graham Gooch's record in the fifth Test against England

India captain Shubman Gill scripted history on Day 3 of the fifth Test against England at the Kennington Oval. In what has been a remarkable 2025 series against England, Gill's consistent run-scoring reached a historic peak in the final match.

Shubman Gill breaks Graham Gooch's towering record

He surpassed a 35-year-old record for the most runs scored by a batsman in a single Test series between India and England. The previous benchmark was held by English great Graham Gooch, who had accumulated an impressive 752 runs during the 1990 series. Gill's achievement at The Oval set a new standard for batting excellence in the historic rivalry between the two cricketing nations.

In the high-stakes Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, Shubman Gill showcased his exceptional batting prowess. Leading the Indian team, he was in phenomenal form, amassing 722 runs in the first four matches. This put him on the cusp of a historic milestone, needing just 31 runs in the fifth and final Test at The Oval to surpass Graham Gooch's long-standing record for the most runs in a Test series.

The pressure was on, and Gill delivered a solid performance in the first innings, scoring 21 runs. This brought him tantalizingly close to the record, leaving him just 10 runs short. In the second innings, he made an additional 11 runs, successfully crossing Gooch's 35-year-old record. He concluded the series with a remarkable total of 754 runs, at an impressive average of 75.4, cementing his place in cricket history.

Gill's performance in the series is among the most impressive by a captain in Test history. His total of 754 runs is the second-highest ever scored by a captain in a single Test series, a feat surpassed only by the legendary Don Bradman, who amassed 810 runs during the 1936-37 Ashes series.

Gill's exceptional form throughout the tour was evident in his statistics. He finished with a stellar average of 75.40, a series that included four centuries and a remarkable highest score of 269, which he made during the second Test at Edgbaston.
