Adam Zampa

Rajasthan Royals bowler Adam Zampa bowls during the IPL 2023 match against Royal Challengers Bangalore, at Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur, Rajasthan, India, May 14, 2023.

Story Highlights:

Adam Zampa has played for 4 IPL franchises.

The highest Zampa has earned in the IPL is Rs 2.4 crore for SRH.

Australia's leading wicket-taker in T20Is and T20 World Cup 2021-winning member, Adam Zampa has opened up on why he pulled out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 mini-auction after getting released by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). Zampa feels he wasn’t rewarded for his skill set by the franchises and had initially decided to take a break from cricket when the Pakistan Super League (PSL) opportunity came knocking on his door.

“To be brutally honest, for someone with my skill set, the money just isn’t there compared to what’s available for other skill sets,” Zampa said as quoted by Geo Super. “Considering the amount of time the IPL requires, it didn’t seem like a reasonable choice for me to keep playing.”

Why Zampa’s move is justified?

Zampa is not wrong in his assessment. While Australian players have earned big money, as high as Cameron Green getting Rs 25.20 crore deal from Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Zampa has not been on multiple franchises' wishlist. In the mega auction, he was roped in for Rs 2.4 crore by SRH which is led by Australia's Pat Cummins.

Earlier, he had played for Rajasthan Royals for base price of Rs 1.50 crore for two seasons. In 2021, he joined Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) for Rs 1.50 crore, again his base price. He made his IPL debut for now-defunct Rising Pune Super Giants (RPS) where he played under MS Dhoni and Steve Smith. He was roped in for his base price of Rs 30 lakh by the Pune franchise. In total, he has earned 7.5 crore from IPL contracts across six seasons.

Also, Zampa has never been a regular in the playing XI for any IPL franchise he has played for. In his debut season, he played five games where he claimed 12 wickets under average of 10. In the next season, he played just six games, picking seven wickets. For RCB, he played just three games, claiming two wickets. For RR, he played six games in 2023 as they already had a good spin-bowling lineup. He got eight wickets for Royals. In the previous season, he played two games for SRH before getting released.

PSL came under radar suddenly

Zampa was roped in by Karachi Kings for PKR 4.5 crore (Rs 1.5 crore approximately).

“I was planning to take a break, but then the PSL came onto the radar about a month ago,” he added. “It all happened pretty quickly, but I’m enjoying it.”

So far, he has played two games for Kings, bagging three wickets. The 34-year-old was named 'Player of the match' for taking two wickets for 11 runs against Lahore Qalandars in a low-scoring affair.
