Michael Atherton heaped praise on Jaiswal following his century

Yashasvi Jaiswal continued his superb form in Test cricket by smashing a brilliant century in the first Test of the five-match series against England. The young India batter took 144 deliveries to score his ton at Headingley, taking India to a strong position in the first innings.

This was the 23-year-old's first Test innings in England and he managed to surpass all expectations by making the most out of the opportunity and bringing up his century just a few deliveries before the end of the second session.

This was his third century against the Three Lions in the longest format. Previously, the left-hander had scored over 700 runs in the home five-match series against the same opposition during February, 2024. Interestingly, Jaiswal went on to convert both those tons into double-centuries and proved to be a nightmare for the English bowlers throughout the tour.

Jaiswal also endured cramps during his knock at Headingley

Jaiswal also had to endure cramps in his hands during his knock at Headingley. The situation got so bad for the youngster that he called for the physios twice, however he continued to battle it out and eventually got the reward for his hardwork. India captain Shubman Gill also gave a good contribution to India's total from the other end and finished the second session unbeaten on 58 as the visitors managed to put up a total of 215/2 on the board.

As Jaiswal moved to triple-figures, former England cricketer Michael Atherton, who was commentating at the time, couldn't help but heavily praise the 23-year-old and even went on to label him as 'one of the most exciting young cricketers in the world.'

“He is an amazing player of spin. He doesn't hang back. He is one of the most exciting young players in the world today. Yashasvi Jaiswal announces himself in England with a wonderful 100," Atherton stated.

However, Jaiswal's joy was short-lived as just after the start of the third session, England skipper Ben Stokes would rattle the batter's stumps and bring his innings to an end on 101. Regardless of the dismissal, Jaiswal's knock which was laced with 16 boundaries and a six, helped in putting India in quite a strong position on the first day and it is now up to Gill and the others to take the visitors to a formidable first-inning total.
