Shubman Gill's historic run in the ongoing second Test against England has he cracked another century in the match on Day 3. Riding on a well-crafted century he became only second Indian after the great Sunil Gavaskar to score century and double century in the same Test. Earlier in the first innings Gill belted a record-breaking double ton to take India to a massive total of 587.
Notably, the legendary Sunil Gavaskar had achieved this remarkable feat in 1971 during a Test series against the West Indies. In that particular match, he scored 124 runs in the first innings followed by an impressive 220 runs in the second innings.
In the entire history of Test cricket, only a select group of nine batsmen have managed the exceptional achievement of scoring both a century and a double century in the same Test match. This distinguished list includes Shubman Gill alongside other cricketing legends such as Sunil Gavaskar, Doug Walters, Lawrence Rowe, Greg Chappell, Graham Gooch, Brian Lara, Kumar Sangakkara, and Marnus Labuschagne.
List of players with double-century and century in same Test:
Doug Walters (Australia) – 242 and 103 v West Indies
Sunil Gavaskar (India) – 124 and 220 v West Indies
Lawrence Rowe (West Indies) – 214 and 100 not out v New Zealand
Greg Chappell (Australia) – 247 not out and 133 v New Zealand
Graham Gooch (England) – 333 and 123 v India
Brian Lara (West Indies) – 221 and 130 v Sri Lanka
Kumar Sangakkara (Sri Lanka) – 319 and 105 v Bangladesh
Marnus Labuschagne (Australia) – 204 and 104 not out v West Indies
Gill took just 129 balls to race to his century which was decorated with 9 fours and 3 sixes. Notably, this was Gill's eighth Test century out of which five have come against England.
Not just this, the 25-year-old has been involved in three partnerships that exceeded 100 runs. This achievement makes him only the second Indian batsman to accomplish this feat against England, following Karun Nair's performance in Chennai in 2016. Furthermore, he becomes only the third Indian cricketer to be part of three century-plus stands in an away Test match, joining the esteemed company of Rahul Dravid (achieving this in Hamilton in 1998/99 and Rawalpindi in 2004) and Sachin Tendulkar (in Sydney in 2004).
Gill's aggregate score of 369* runs in this single Test match is now the highest ever achieved by an Indian batsman in a Test, surpassing Sunil Gavaskar's record of 344 runs against the West Indies in 1971.
Adding to his list of accomplishments, Gill is now only the third Asian cricketer to score 300 or more runs in a Test match played in a SENA country (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia). The other two Asian batsmen to achieve this milestone were Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar, who accomplished this in Adelaide and Sydney, respectively, during India's tour of Australia in 2003/04.
