A verbal altercation occurred between Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ben Stokes on Day 1 of the second Test between India and England which begun on July 2 at Edgbaston, Birmingham.
Yashasvi Jaiswal entered the second Test following a mixed performance in the opening match of the series at Headingley in Leeds which India ended up losing by five wickets. While he displayed his batting prowess, his fielding performance was notably poor. In the first innings of the Leeds Test, Jaiswal scored an impressive century before being dismissed for just four runs in the subsequent innings. However, it was his fielding that garnered significant attention, as he had a particularly difficult time on the field, with the ball frequently finding him. He ended up dropping a total of four catches, which equaled the record for the most catches dropped by an Indian player in a single Test match.
Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ben Stokes' face off at Edgbaston
Jaiswal followed up his first Test batting exploits with another robust fifty in the second match at Edgbaston. He appeared comfortable facing the English bowlers and effectively scored runs all around the ground. As Jaiswal was batting well, the atmosphere on the field intensified during the 17th over. In that over, after hitting England's captain Ben Stokes for a boundary with an elegant on-drive, Jaiswal became involved in a heated exchange of words with Stokes. Fortunately, the situation did not escalate further, and the players eventually resumed the game without taking things ahead.
