India Test captain Shubman Gill led from the front on Day 1 of the second Test against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham. Gill scored his second Test century on the trot since taking over the reins from Rohit Sharma. He remained unbeaten for 114 and helped the visitors post 310/5 on the opening day of the second Test. After the day's play, former India head coach Ravi Shastri lavished praise on Gill for his disciplined approach and the subtle changes in technique one needs to make in English conditions.
“Gill’s performance was superb. It was disciplined, he looked solid, looked fantastic. He has worked hard on his defence. When he last came to England, he played with hard hands, pushed at the ball, but now, the top hand is in control. He allows the ball to come to him, trusts in his defence and has all the shots in the book when he goes on the attack,” said Shastri on Sky Sports.
Gill's Test numbers in England before taking over captaincy
Gill's first Test in England was the World Test Championship (WTC) 2021 final against New Zealand. He registered scores of 28 and 8. Then, he played the rescheduled fifth Test in Birmingham and returned with scores of 17 and 4. Then, he played in the WTC 2023 final against Australia where he scored 13 and 18.
In the first Test at Headingley, Leeds, he scored 147, followed by a single-digit score. In just three innings, he has two centuries in the series already.
Jaiswal heaps praise on his captain
Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, who scored 87, praised his teammate as well. He noted that Gill has a clear mindset about what he needs to do as a batter and captain.
"I think he's been amazing the way he's batting. It's just incredible to see him bat and as a captain, also, he's been amazing. I think he's very clear in his head what he needs to do with the team, and we are very confident what we are going to do. So, yeah, we are just trying our best," Jaiswal told the reporters on July 2.
