Story Highlights:

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi became the youngest-ever cricketer to make India debut

However, Sooryavanshi could only score 14 runs on his India debut

Although the scorecard might show a modest return, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s highly anticipated international bow offered plenty of evidence that the 15-year-old belongs on the big stage. Stepping out for the second T20I against England at Old Trafford, the Bihar prodigy managed a whirlwind 14 runs off just 9 deliveries, punctuated by two towering sixes. Before even facing a ball, he etched his name into the history books by becoming India’s youngest-ever international cricketer—eclipsing the previous record held by Shafali Verma—having received his maiden cap from teammate Tilak Varma at the tender age of 15 years and 99 days.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi shows early promise but departs cheaply on debut

The young left-hander was immediately given a fiery welcome by the English attack, opening the innings against the formidable Jofra Archer and a highly motivated fellow debutant, Josh Tongue. The English pace duo tested the rookie with fierce bounce and uncomfortable speed, forcing Sooryavanshi to grind through his first few balls before finally getting off the mark by deflecting a sharp yorker to square leg. Despite the intense early pressure, the teenage sensation quickly shook off the nerves, unleashing the audacious, fearless strokeplay that has generated so much excitement around his future.

The defining moment of the teenager's brief stay came against Jofra Archer. Shuffling across his stumps to anticipate a searing 148kph full delivery, Sooryavanshi drop-kneed and audaciously scooped the speedster over fine leg for his first international maximum, sending the Manchester crowd into raptures. It was a remarkably bold statement against one of the game's premier express bowlers, instantly illustrating the 15-year-old’s immense self-belief. He carried that explosive energy straight into the following over, confidently rocking back to launch a full-length delivery from Josh Tongue high over the midwicket boundary for his second towering six. Alongside Abhishek Sharma, the rookie’s lightning-quick hands and uncompromising intent gave India a flying start.

How Will Jacks trapped Sooryavanshi?

Yet, the harsh realities of international cricket caught up with the debutant just as quickly. Brought into the attack to stem the flow of runs, Will Jacks brilliantly set the trap by following up a full delivery with a much slower, wider ball. Lured into an aggressive charge down the wicket, Sooryavanshi swung hard but missed completely, leaving Jos Buttler to collect the ball and whip off the bails for a routine stumping. While a score of 14 won't dominate the headlines, his fearless approach against Archer and Tongue proved exactly why the selectors fast-tracked him. The innings was cut short, but the flashes of brilliance left no doubt that this teenager has a massive future ahead of him.
