Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced India's T20I squad for five-T20I series against West Indies which will be played from August 3 to August 13. The newly appointed chief selector Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee made a few changes to the T20I squad. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Tilak Varma and Mukesh Kumar have been rewarded for their Indian Premier League (IPL) performance as they received their maiden call-up.

IPL 2023 numbers of new faces

Jaiswal was in phenomenal form in IPL 2023. The Rajasthan Royals (RR) opener scored 625 runs from 14 innings at an average of 48.08 including one century and five half-centuries. His trike rate was a commendable 163.61.

Varma was indispensable part of MI's middle-order. He scored 343 runs from 11 innings at an average of 42.88 including one half-century. He scored at a strike rate of 164.11.

In his debut IPL season, Mukesh took seven wickets from 10 appearances. His economy rate was not impressive as he leaked runs as 10.52 runs per over.

The comebacks

It also marks comeback of leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi and pacer Avesh Khan. The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) pacer played his last T20I in the Asia Cup 2022 where he conceded 53 runs from his quota of four overs. He missed out the rest of the tournament due to illness and wasn’t selected for following series. Bishnoi played his last T20I against Pakistan in Asia Cup. The 22-year-old wasn't given many chances and was later dropped.

Message to seniors

It is clear now. Under Hardik Pandya's captaincy, the selectors have moved on from the likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin. The three players have not played a single T20I since India’s exit from T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia after losing to England. While Rohit had a lacklustre IPL 2023, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) batter Kohli scored 639 runs from 14 innings at an average of 53.25 including two centuries in the season.

India's T20I squad: Ishan Kishan (wk), Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Tilak Varma, Surya Kumar Yadav (vc), Sanju Samson (wk), Hardik Pandya (c), Axar Patel, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh, Umran Malik, Avesh Khan, Mukesh Kumar
