Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) made a forced change to their coaching staff ahead of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Head coach Daniel Vettori roped in his former teammate James Franklin as a replacement for Dale Steyn. The former South Africa pacer pulled out of IPL 2024 due to personal reasons which left SRH without a bowling coach with a few weeks to go in the 17th season.
Franklin’s IPL stint
Franklin represented MI in the 2011 and 2012 editions. This will be the first time he will be associated with an IPL franchise in a coaching capacity.
Franklin’s stints as coach
Earlier, Vettori and Franklin had worked together in the coaching staff of Middlesex's County side and The Hundred franchise Birmingham Phoenix. Franklin is currently working as an assistant coach at Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise Islamabad United. Earlier, was also the head coach of Durham's County side.
SRH need to shrug off two poor seasons
With Franklin joining Vettori in SRH's coaching staff, the duo have their work cut out as the Hyderabad-based franchise has been in dire straits in the past couple of seasons. In 2022, they finished eighth on the points table. In the previous season, they managed to win just four games out of 14 and finished at the bottom of the points table.
SRH franchise has a good number of pacers in their squad including Pat Cummins, Marco Jansen, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Umran Malik, T Natarajan, Jaydev Unadkat and Akash Singh.
Meanwhile, SRH are yet to announce their captain for the upcoming season. There are reports that Aiden Markram will not lead the side despite leading SA20 franchise Sunrisers Eastern Cape to a title win. Australian skipper Cummins who was picked for a whopping Rs 20.5 crore in the mini-auction is set to become the captain.
