A disappointed Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) owner Sanji Goenka had an animated conversation with skipper KL Rahul after the team’s 10-wicket defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). After having a heated conversation with Rahul, Goenka also had a conversation with head coach Justin Langer. A dejected Rahul whose plans with the bat and as captain failed against SRH decided to excuse himself from the conversation and moved towards his kitbag to put the gloves back.
While the 10-wicket loss with 62 balls left in the innings had a massive impact on their net run rate (NRR), LSG are still not out of playoff contention. LSG slipped to the sixth position on the points table but with six wins from 12 games, their playoff hopes are alive.
After a long break, LSG will go up against Rishabh Pant-led Delhi Capitals (DC) on May 14 at Arun Jaitley Stadium. If they beat DC, they will also move the playoff competition out of the way. Their final league stage clash is against Hardik Pandya's Mumbai Indians (MI) who are already eliminated from the top four battle.
What Rahul said after the match
A dejected Rahul credited Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head for their sensational batting that made the run chase of 166 look like a child’s play.
“I am lost for words. We have watched that kind of batting on tv. But this is unreal batting. Everything seemed to find the middle of the bat. Kudos to their skills. They have worked hard on their six hitting skills. They didn't give us a chance to know what the pitch played in the second innings. Was hard to stop them as they teed off from ball one. Once you are on the losing side, there are questions marks on the decisions taken,” Rahul told the broadcasters after the loss.
Rahul also admitted that LSG were 40-50 runs short of the par total. In addition, he feels even 240 was not safe a target against the free-flowing SRH openers.
“We were 40-50 runs short. When we lost wickets in the powerplay, we couldn't get any momentum. Ayush and Nicky batted well to get us to 166. But even if we would have got 240, they could have chased it as well,” he added.
