Pant has been cleared to play as a wicketkeeper-batter by the BCCI.

After surviving a horrific car accident, undergoing a few surgeries, and completing his rehabilitation, star wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant is set to return to competitive cricket. Pant got the fitness certificate from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and joined the Delhi Capitals (DC) in Vizag more than a week ahead of their first match in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Ahead of his much-anticipated comeback, Pant feels that he is about to make his debut again.

"I'm excited and nervous at the same time. It feels like I'm going to make my debut again," the wicketkeeper-batter said.

While Pant remained positive throughout his rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), Bengaluru, he feels that the comeback is nothing short of a miracle. He thanked his fans, the board, and the staff at NCA for their contribution to his recovery.

"To be able to play cricket again after everything I've been through is nothing short of a miracle," an emotional Pant said. “I'm grateful to all my well-wishers and fans, and most importantly, the BCCI and staff at NCA. All their love and support continues to give me immense strength.”

Pant thanks Delhi Capitals

Pant was grateful for DC franchise owners and their support staff as well.

"I'm excited to return to Delhi Capitals & the IPL – a tournament I enjoy so much. Our team owners and support staff have been by my side throughout with their full support, guidance and co-operation at every step, for which I am deeply grateful. I can't wait to re-unite with my DC family and play in front of the fans again," he added.

Few questions ahead of Pant’s return

DC will begin their IPL 2024 campaign in an away game against Shikhar Dhawan-led Punjab Kings on March 23 in Mohali.

While Pant has been cleared by the board to play as a wicketkeeper-batter, it will be interesting to see if he plays the role behind the stumps in the IPL. Head coach Ricky Ponting had made it clear that they don’t want to risk him getting injured again even if it means he plays 10 out of 14 league matches. In addition, DC are yet to announce Pant as their captain. In his absence last season, David Warner led the side.
