Highlights:

Shubman Gill wasted a review in the first over.

Devdutt Padikkal departed for a single-digit score.

Gujarat Titans (GT) skipper Shubman Gill and Rahul Tewatia were involved in a heated exchange in the first over of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) innings. Third umpire Nitin Menon caused the confusion after he did not feel the need to confirm that there was an ultraedge for the lbw review against LSG’s top-order batter Devdutt Padikkal

On the fifth delivery of the first over, Umesh Yadav's back of the length delivery skidded on and all Padikkal could get on it was an inside edge before it hit the back pad. Umesh and Gill had a discussion and opted for DRS. After it was referred upstairs, third umpire Menon gave his decision after seeing the replay.

Gill was unaware of what had happened and argued with the umpire. Tewatia walked up to the umpires as well and had a heated conversation with them.

GT’s review went in vain. Later, the replays showed that there was a massive spike on the ultraedge and Menon decided against it to save some time.

However, Padikkal could not do much damage. The southpaw hit a boundary against Umesh on the first ball of the third over. On the next delivery, he edged one to first slip fielder Vijay Shankar. He managed to score just seven runs from just seven balls.

Umesh’s impressive numbers

Umesh was impressive with the new ball. He was hit for a maximum by Quinton de Kock on the second delivery. But the veteran pacer came back well to get his wicket on the fourth ball. In the fifth over, four overthrow runs spoilt his bowling figures in powerplay overs. He conceded 22 runs from three overs. Gill did not give another over to him.

LSG post fighting total

After two early wickets, LSG skipper KL Rahul and Marcus Stoinis shared a 73-run partnership for the third wicket. Stoinis went on to score 58 runs from 43 balls. Later, cameos from Nicholas Pooran and Ayush Badoni helped LSG post a fighting total of 163/5 on the board. Apart from Umesh, Darshan Nalkande took a couple of wickets. Rashid Khan was economical and picked up one wicket in the slog overs.
