The newly appointed Delhi Capitals' assistant coach Shane Watson is apprehensive about the struggling Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the ongoing 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Simon Katich, who was the assistant coach of SRH, stepped down from his role right after the IPL mega auction 2022 and this was the warning sign for the Hyderabad franchise as per Watson.
Kane Williamson and Co. were handed a 61-run hammering from a new-look and re-energised Rajasthan Royals to open their IPL 2022 campaign on a dismal note.
RR got the better of SRH in every department after skipper Sanju Samson led from the front with a scintillating 27-ball 55 to power his team to an imposing 210 for six.
During his conversation with the YouTube channel ‘The Grade Cricketer’, he shared his thoughts on the situation prevailing at the Hyderabad franchise.
“Alarm bells started when Simon Katich left just after the auction. That’s normally not a great sight because Katich is one of the most generally good people. It’s really injustice really if people really go against what they say.
“So obviously something has gone down there that Katich stepped away immediately and won’t be a part of it. That’s a warning sign to start with.”
SRH was the bottom-placed team in the IPL 2021 and their run of misfortune are going on since then. Despite having some high-profile players, they failed miserably.
Katich relinquished his duties just two months after being appointed Tom Moody's deputy. In his official communication to the franchise, Katich said he was uncomfortable staying inside the IPL bubble and away from his family for a long period.
But later, a report by The Australian pointed out that Katich had left the side because he did not agree with the team management and felt that the plans that he had for the auction were ignored. Hyderabad’s team for the IPL 2022 is not that great according to some experts as they let go of some of their finest players before the auction.
Opining on this, Watson said: “The make-up of their team is not incredibly strong and then how they have performed in the first game. Yes, Rajasthan Royals have a very good squad, and they played really well, but it’s not looking great. It feels like there is a lot of stuff around the team that is obviously not helping everything on the field.”
