New Zealand failed to chase down the target of 165

South Africa’s spin attack proved to be the difference-maker on March 22 as the tourists secured a 19-run win over New Zealand in the fourth T20I. With this South Africa levelled the five-match series 2-2, setting the stage for a high-stakes series decider in Christchurch on March 25.

South Africa beat New Zealand by 19 runs in 4th T20I

The Black Caps initially seemed to be in a commanding position during their chase in Wellington. After the Proteas posted a competitive total of 164/5 riding on Connor Esterhuizen's 57, New Zealand looked comfortable at the midway point, sitting at 88/3 after 10 overs. However, the momentum shifted dramatically as the hosts suffered a batting collapse, losing wickets in quick succession before eventually being bowled out for 145 in 18.5 overs, thanks to Gerald Coetzee's 3/31.

The turning point was spearheaded by South African spinners Keshav Maharaj and Prenelan Subrayen, who choked the scoring rate and applied immense pressure during the middle overs. Maharaj, serving as captain and the most seasoned player in the touring party, led by example. He delivered a disciplined spell, finishing with figures of 2/22 from his four overs and making it exceptionally difficult for the New Zealand batters to find the boundary.

Spinners, Coetzee break Kiwis' back

New Zealand's run chase was led by opener Tim Robinson, who provided the top score of 32. However, his efforts were countered by a disciplined performance from the South African bowling attack, spearheaded by paceman Gerald Coetzee. Coetzee proved to be a major threat throughout the innings, finishing with impactful figures of 3/31 to dismantle the Kiwi batting order.

Earlier in the day, South Africa's total was built around a solid half-century from wicketkeeper Connor Esterhuizen. He anchored the innings with a brisk 57 off just 36 deliveries, providing the necessary momentum for the visitors. His knock eventually came to an end thanks to a moment of brilliance in the field by debutant Katene Clarke, who pulled off a spectacular outfield catch off the bowling of Ben Sears.

Sears was a standout performer with the ball for New Zealand, maintaining exceptional control to finish with figures of 1/22 from his four overs. He was particularly effective at the death, showcasing his composure by conceding only two runs in the final over of the South African innings to keep the target within reach. But all his effort went in vain as Proteas had the last laugh in the end.
