Prabhsimran Singh turned heads with his magnificent century that helped Punjab Kings (PBKS) post a challenging total of 167/7 and later thrash Delhi Capitals (DC) by 31 runs at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Saturday (May 13). Riding on an emphatic win Punjab kept their hopes alive to make it to the IPL 2023's playoffs.
After hammering 103 off 65, Prabhsimran became the first PBKS batter smash a ton in the ongoing season of the glitzy league. Also, the star PBKS opener became only the sixth uncapped Indian batter and seventh overall to belt a ton in the IPL history. Other uncapped Indian batters to score an IPL century are Manish Pandey, Paul Valthaty, Devdutt Padikkal, Rajat Patidar and Yashasvi Jaiswal.
Prabhsimran was roped in by PBKS for Rs 60 lakh while Sam Curran, who couldn't do much with both bat and ball, was the most expensive pick of the IPL 2023.
Meanwhile, former India's explosive batter Virender Sehwag, who doesn't mince words when it comes to giving his opinion, lauded Prabhsimran's heroics but came down heavily on the most expensive player in the history of IPL, Sam Curran.
Besides Prabhsimran's maiden ton in the match against DC, Curran was the second highest scorer for PBKS. While bowling too, Curran didn't impress as he bowled a two-over spell in which he conceded 18 runs.
Sehwag slammed Curran and also questioned England's star all-rounder's performance in the ongoing season of the IPL.
“Punjab Kings have benefitted from the chances that they've given to Prabhsimran. Now, he has to be consistent. And I think the PBKS will benefit a lot from such a player. When he came for the first time, he was bought for a lot of money (INR 4.8 crore). This time around, he fetched quite less (INR 60 lakh). But he proved his talent today,” Sehwag told Cricbuzz.
"He showed that he can hit those centuries. Again, he was bought for INR 60 lakh, and if a player fetching that much scores hundreds and wins you a couple of games, there can be nothing better than that. You bought Sam Curran for Rs 18.5 crores, what has he done?" Sehwag concluded.
Punjab have not 12 points with six victories and as many defeats in a total of 12 matches played so far and need to win both the remaining ties in order to stand a chance to qualifty for the playoffs.
