Harry Brook cracked the fastest ODI double ton against Sri Lanka

Brook took just 114 balls to complete his double century

In a breathtaking exhibition of explosive hitting, England skipper Harry Brook created history by smashing a record-breaking double century (202) against Sri Lanka in the ongoing tri-series at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. In doing so, the 27-year-old dynamic batter became the very first English batter to record a double ton in Men's One-Day International (ODI) cricket.

Coming on the back of England’s defeat to Pakistan in their tri-series opener on the same ground, where Brook had urged his side to embrace a more aggressive and fearless brand of cricket, the skipper led by direct example. His astonishing knock propelled England to a colossal total of 429/4 in 50 overs, the highest total ever registered in an ODI on Pakistani soil.

Brook’s knock was a textbook demonstration of controlled acceleration. Entering the crease with England looking to rebuild momentum after losing opening partnership rhythm, he initially took a measured approach to assess the Rawalpindi surface. Brook accumulated just 13 runs off his first 24 balls before launching a relentless assault on the Sri Lankan bowling attack.

He brought up his half-century in 42 deliveries and continued to construct a magnificent third-wicket partnership of 159 runs alongside veteran star Joe Root (69 off 56). Brook reached his fourth ODI century off 75 deliveries, a brilliant, structured knock that laid the foundation for what was to come.

Brook breaks Gill's record for fastest ODI double ton

It was after reaching three figures that Brook unleashed an unprecedented level of destructive strokeplay. Switching into total carnage mode, Brook shifted from 100 to 200 in a staggering 39 balls. His ability to manipulate field placements, launch deliveries over the ropes, and find vacant gaps around the ground left Sri Lanka completely helpless.

In total, Brook’s 116-ball stay yielded 202 runs at an astonishing strike rate of 174.14, consisting of 21 boundaries and 10 towering sixes.

By reaching the 200-run milestone off just 114 deliveries, Harry Brook officially broke the world record for the fastest double century in Men's ODI history.

He surpassed the previous mark held by Indian captain Shubman Gill, who had reached a double hundred in 117 balls against the West Indies. Brook's unbelievable speed across his second hundred redefined what is achievable in 50-over cricket.

Brook’s innings was not just a individual milestone; it erased multiple national and international records:

First English Batter to Reach an ODI Double Century: Brook surpassed Ben Stokes’ previous national record score of 182 (made against New Zealand at The Oval in 2023) to become England's highest-ever individual scorer in ODI cricket.

Fastest ODI Double Century Ever: Reached 200 in 114 balls, beating Shubman Gill's 117-ball record.

Most Boundaries by an English Batter in an ODI: Brook accumulated an England-record 31 total boundaries (21 fours, 10 sixes) in a single ODI innings.

14th Double Century in Men's ODI History: Became only the 9th individual batter to cross the 200-run threshold in Men's ODIs, recording the 12th highest individual score overall.

Highest total in Pakistan: Powered England to 429/4, surpassing all previous ODI totals posted in Pakistan.

Highest Overseas Total against a Test Nation: England's total of 429/4 eclipsed their previous overseas benchmark of 418/6 against the West Indies in Grenada (2019).

England's death-overs batting mayhem with Brook, Jacks

Following Joe Root’s departure for 69, England promoted all-rounder Will Jacks to number five, unleashing one of the most explosive late-overs partnerships ever seen in white-ball cricket.

Jacks and Brook added a blistering, unbroken stand of 185 runs from just 79 deliveries. Jacks clobbered a rapid 25-ball half-century, remaining unbeaten on 66 off 30 balls. Together, the duo led an unbelievable finish that saw England hammer 156 runs in the final 10 overs alone.

During the onslaught in the 49th over, Brook scooped left-arm seamer Dilshan Madushanka over the leg side for a six to officially surpass Ben Stokes' 182-run national record. Despite being dropped on 185 at mid-off in the same over, Brook remained focused.

How Brook brought his double ton

Entering the final over bowled by Janith Liyanage on 186, Brook wasted no time:

Ball 1: Smashed over extra cover for a maximum to reach 192.
Ball 2 & 3: Hustled hard between the wickets to collect consecutive twos, moving to 196.
Ball 4: Executed a delicate paddle-sweep past short fine leg for a boundary, bringing up his double century off 114 balls while non-striker Will Jacks raised his arms in early celebration.
Ball 5: Took a double to move to 202.
Ball 6: In an attempt to finish with another big hit, Brook miscued a slice into the hands of third man to fall off the final delivery of the innings for 202.

He walked off the park arm-in-arm with Will Jacks to a standing ovation from the Rawalpindi crowd.

A Phenomenal Record in Pakistan and as Captain

This epic performance further solidified Harry Brook's standing as one of the elite multi-format batters in world cricket. Rawalpindi and Pakistan continue to be happy hunting grounds for the Yorkshireman.

In Pakistan across formats: Brook averages over 74 in international matches on Pakistani soil, a record highlighted by his massive Test triple-century (317) in Multan.

Impact of Leadership: Leadership seems to bring out the absolute best in him. As England’s white-ball captain, Brook’s ODI batting average soars to 56.04 (compared to 25.2 as a player). A similar leap is seen in T20Is, where he averages 47.57 as skipper compared to 28.5 without the armband.
