Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the T20I squad for home series against South Africa. In the absence of Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul will be leading the T20I side with Rishabh Pant as his deputy.
Dinesh Karthik, Hardik Pandya have made a comeback into the side on the back of their performances in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022.
Jammu & Kashmir pacer Umran Malik has received his maiden call-up after bowling record-breaking thunderbolts for Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2022. Similarly, Arshdeep Singh has been included in the side as well.
BCCI has rested Rohit, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah from the T20I side. However, they will be part of the Test squad for the rescheduled Test against England.
Also, Suryakumar Yadav has not been included as he got ruled out in the latter stages of IPL 2022 due to an injury. Similarly, Ravindra Jadeja is missing from the T20I squad as well.
The selectors have not considered IPL as the ultimate yardstick for dropping players. Venkatesh Iyer and Ishan Kishan have retained their positions in the side despite a lacklustre IPL.
Veteran Shikhar Dhawan and wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson did not find a place in the side. Dhawan has had a good IPL season with 421 runs from 13 games at an average of 38.27 including three half-centuries. On the other hand, Samson has scored 374 runs from 14 games at an average of 28.77 including two half-centuries.
India will play South Africa for five T20Is. The T20I side will begin on June 9 and go on till June 19.
