MS Dhoni’s return as captain got Chennai Super Kings (CSK) back to winning ways. Taking over the captaincy role from Ravindra Jadeja, Dhoni had a lot to say about the transition that happened in the first half of the tournament.

“Between me and Jadeja, he knew last season itself that he will be given a chance to captain this year. He knew and got enough time to prepare, what is important is you want him to lead the side and I wanted that transition to happen. In the first 2 games there was information going in towards Jaddu and after that I left it to him to decide which angle to bowl and all that,” Dhoni said in the post-match presentation ceremony.

Dhoni also shared that he did not want Jadeja to feel that he was made captain just for namesake. The 40-year-old talked about the challenges of captaincy and how they affected the all-rounder’s game.

“At the end of the season, you don't want him to feel as the captaincy was done by someone else and I'm just going for toss. So it was a gradual transition. Spoon-feeding doesn't really help captain, on the field you have to take those crucial decisions and you have to take responsibility for those decisions. Once you become the captain, we have to take care of lot many things and that also includes your own game. What I felt was it was having an effect on his game, because I would love to have a Jadeja as a bowler, batter and a fielder,” Dhoni further explained.

Jadeja has looked a pale shadow of himself whether it is in the bowling, fielding or batting department. Surprisingly, he has put down a few easy catches as well.

Dhoni is happy to get the old Jadeja back. The left-arm spinner conceded just 15 runs from the three overs he bowled. Batting at no.4, he faced just one delivery of which he gave a single to Devon Conway.

“Even if you relieve captainship and if you are at your best and thats what we want. We were also losing a great fielder, we are struggling for a deep mid-wicket fielder, still we have dropped 17-18 catches and that's a matter of concern,” the four-time title-winning skipper concluded.
