The third match of the 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), which was a high-scoring thriller between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) witnessed a bizarre record of conceding most extras in a match on Sunday (March 27).
A total of 413 runs were scored during the match, where Mayank Agarwal-led side overhauled RCB's huge target of 206 with five wickets to spare. But the highlight of the match was the 45 extras which were conceded both the teams, breaking a 15-year-old IPL record.
PBKS got off to a winning start on Sunday night, however the bowlers had an off day. Arshadeep Singh proved his retention right by dismissing their biggest threat of the match and RCB captain Faf Du Plessis for 88 while Rahul Chahar also had an impressive outing with his 1/22 in a spell of four overs. However, the duo were not reciprocated by the other bowlers as PBKS conceded 23 extras while bowling. It contained five byes, six leg-byes and 12 wides.
On the other hand, RCB bowlers too did not have a good day defending the colossal total. Barring those two quick wickets, Mohammed Siraj lacked energy, Harshal Patel was unaided by the dew setting in and Wanindu Hasaranga, their key bowler for the evening, was hit all over the park by the batters. And moreover, the RCB attack conceded 22 extras during the game comprising one leg-bye and 21 wides, 14 of which were delivered by Siraj.
The total of 45 extras is the most ever conceded in a single IPL game, surpassing the previous record of 38 which was registered during the inaugural season in a match between Deccan Chargers and Kolkata Knight Riders. A similar figure was also recorded during the IPL 2010 game between Punjab and Mumbai Indians.
RCB's tally of 23 extras is now the joint sixth-highest in IPL history, followed by PBKS's 22 at the seventh spot in a list topped by Kolkata Knight Riders, who had conceded 28 extras during the IPL 2008 game against Deccan at the Eden Gardens.
Meanwhile, PBKS created another unique record with their joint-highest successful run chase in IPL 2022 against RCB at DY Patil Sports Academy, Mumbai. As Shahrukh Khan finished the run chase with style with a boundary off the last ball of the penultimate over, PBKS broke Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) record, which was created in 2019. The score of 208/5 by PBKS is the highest IPL score without any of the batter scoring an half-century or more in the innings.
In the high-scoring run chase, two PBKS batters came close to hitting a half-century but got out in the middle overs. Opener Shikhar Dhawan and debutant Bhanuka Rajapaksa scored 43 runs each before losing their wicket to Harshal Patel and Mohammed Siraj respectively. Other batters contributed with cameos as PBKS won the match with six balls to spare. On the other hand, Siraj leaked 59 runs from his four overs which turned out to be the difference between the two teams.
It is also the joint-highest successful run chase by PBKS, their best since 2014. Interestingly, it is also the highest successful run chase against RCB. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have done it twice whereas Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have done it once.
