After a ten-day break, the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 was set to resume with a blockbuster clash between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on May 17. However, as of the current moment, persistent rainfall in Bengaluru has led to a delay in the toss for the 58th match of the tournament. This situation raises questions among fans and supporters of both teams regarding the latest possible time for a full 20-overs game to start.
According to IPL regulations, a complete 40-over match is scheduled to conclude by 10:56 PM IST. An additional buffer of 60 minutes is allocated to accommodate any rain interruptions and ensure the completion of the game. Generally, the reduction of overs begins after 8:45 PM IST. Therefore, if play does not commence by approximately 8:30 PM today, it is highly likely that the match will be shortened, regardless of when it eventually gets underway.
Currently, the weather conditions at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium are characterized by heavy rainfall, and the forecast for later in the evening is also unfavorable, predicting thunderstorms. Nevertheless, the stadium boasts an excellent drainage system, raising hopes that play can resume swiftly once the rain subsides. In the event of a prolonged delay, the absolute final cut-off time to facilitate a minimum five-over match is 10:56. Should play not begin by this time, the match will be abandoned, and both teams will be awarded one point each.
Currently occupying the second position in the IPL 2025 points table with 8 wins and 16 points, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru stand to gain if the weather prevents a match. In the event of a washout, RCB would be awarded a point, elevating their total to 17 and propelling them to the top of the standings, thereby displacing the Gujarat Titans.
On the other hand, Kolkata Knight Riders find themselves in a more precarious situation. With 5 wins and 11 points from their 12 matches, their chances of qualifying for the playoffs are already slim. If today's game is unable to proceed, KKR's playoff aspirations would be virtually extinguished. Consequently, both the Royal Challengers Bengaluru and the Kolkata Knight Riders will be fervently hoping that conditions allow for at least a shortened five-over contest.
