The race for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 playoffs has entered its decisive phase, with multiple franchises still battling for the four available spots as the league stage nears its conclusion. While some teams are on the verge of qualification, others remain dependent on complicated equations, net run rate, and results elsewhere.
As things stand, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Mumbai Indians (MI) have already been eliminated from the tournament.
RCB and GT eye top-two finish as playoff race intensifies for PBKS
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) currently lead the points table with 16 points from 12 games and boast the best net run rate in the tournament. With matches remaining against Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), RCB are firmly in control of their destiny. Two wins would guarantee a top-two finish, while even one more victory should almost confirm qualification.
Gujarat Titans (GT) are also placed strongly with 16 points from 12 matches. Their remaining games against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) could decide whether they secure a direct route to Qualifier 1. Their healthy net run rate has further strengthened their position.
Sunrisers Hyderabad remain in contention with 14 points from 12 games. Victories in both remaining fixtures against CSK and RCB would seal their playoff berth. However, a loss could drag them into a tight battle involving net run rate and other results.
Punjab Kings, currently on 13 points from 11 matches, still have three games left and remain well placed despite recent setbacks. Winning all three games would take them to 19 points and guarantee qualification.
CSK, RR, DC, and KKR face uphill battle
Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals (RR) are still mathematically alive with 12 points each. Both teams can still reach 18 points, but their playoff hopes may eventually come down to net run rate and head-to-head results.
For Delhi Capitals (DC), the challenge looks significantly tougher. With only 10 points from 12 games and a poor net run rate, Delhi must win both remaining matches convincingly and hope for several favourable outcomes elsewhere.
Meanwhile, defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders are hanging by a thread after their defeat against RCB. KKR can only reach a maximum of 15 points, leaving them heavily dependent on multiple results going their way in the final stretch.
