Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) English all-rounder Jamie Overton rescued his team from a collapse in their opening game of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 against Rajasthan Royals (RR). Overton walked out to bat at no.8 when CSK were 57/6 after eighth overs and contributed with a 43-run knock, preventing them from getting bowled out under 100. In doing so, he broke MS Dhoni’s record for highest score by a CSK batter at no.8 or lower.
In IPL 2024, Dhoni contributed with an unbeaten 16-ball 37 against Delhi Capitals (DC) in a losing cause.
Overton's 43 is also the highest score by batter at no.8 or lower against RR. The previous best belonged to Washington Sundar, who contributed with a 17-ball 40 for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in a losing cause in IPL 2022.
Overall, the record for highest score in IPL by a batter at no.8 or lower belongs to Gujarat Titans' (GT) Rashid Khan. He scored an unbeaten 44-ball 79 in a losing cause against Mumbai Indians (MI) in IPL 2023.
Overton misses maiden IPL fifty
Overton missed a chance to score his maiden T20I fifty. He was run out on the fourth ball of the last over, owing to a mix-up with Anshul Kamboj. His knock of 36-ball 43 featured two fours and as many sixes. CSK were bowled out for 127 with two balls left in the innings. Had Overton scored a fifty, he would've joined the elite list of batters to achieve the feat in lower order.
Highest 10th wicket partnership for CSK
The 33-run partnership for the 10th wicket between Overton and Anshul Kamboj is the highest for CSK. It is also the joint second-highest 10th wicket partnership in IPL history, alongside SRH's Pat Cummins and V Viyaskanth against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in IPL 2024. The record belongs to Shikhar Dhawan and Mohit Rathee who shared an unbeaten 55-run partnership for Punjab Kings (PBKS) against SRH in IPL 2023.
No Brevis, Dhoni
CSK were without the services of their young gun Dewald Brevis and legendary wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni. Brevis is recovering from a side strain whereas Dhoni is managing knee issues. The Proteas batter is expected to be fit sooner than Dhoni. CSK’s next clash is against PBKS at home on April 3. It is yet to be seen if Brevis is fit for the game.
