Digvesh Rathi had a phenomenal debut IPL campaign, finishing as the Lucknow Super Giants' top wicket-taker with 14 wickets under his name from 13 matches in the recently-concluded season. However, while he may have made headlines due to his brilliant bowling displays, he also got heavily criticized for his 'notebook celebration' throughout the season.
Rathi was fined three times by BCCI during IPL 2025
The celebration resulted in him getting fined by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for a total of three times during IPL 2025. He was even suspended for a match following his on-field argument with Sunrisers Hyderabad batter Abhishek Sharma, who called out the spinner for his celebration.
However, Yograj Singh, former India cricketer and father of Yuvraj Singh, slammed BCCI for handling the situation in a wrong way and even labelled the fines on Rathi as 'nonsense.'
“Come on man, don't fine them. It's okay. You are still friends with the bowlers. Everybody is not the same. Emotions go. Forgive them. Obviously, at the end of the day, you're friends, if you say sorry, the matter is over. Have a big heart and don't get into these petty things. What is this nonsense going on, fining kids,” Yograj said on InsideSport.
Despite his controversial celebration, Rathi quickly became one of LSG's most important players in the squad. The 25-year-old spinner didn't only rack up scalps, but also remained quite economical throughout his debut season. Rathi maintained an economy rate of 8.25 and proved to be quite a big headache for the opposing batters.
However, despite his valiant efforts, LSG failed to qualify for the playoffs and got knocked out after finishing seventh on the IPL standings, accumulating 12 points from 14 matches. Rathi was easily among the best players for the Lucknow-based franchise during the season and the side will be looking to keep a hold of him for many seasons to come.
