After an enduring wait of 18 years, Virat Kohli-starrer Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) finally lifted their first IPL title. A stellar bowling performance, spearheaded by Krunal Pandya's match-winning figures of 2 wickets for 17 runs, and complemented by a disciplined pace attack from Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Josh Hazlewood, and Yash Dayal, secured RCB's maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title. They gunned down Punjab Kings (PBKS) by six runs at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium to give their fans.
Virat Kohli's first reaction after RCB clinch IPL 2025 title
For the Punjab Kings, the quest for their first IPL title continues. Despite a commendable season under the astute leadership of Shreyas Iyer and the guidance of coach Ricky Ponting, PBKS fell heartbreakingly short in their first final appearance in 11 years.
However, the night belonged to RCB and Virat Kohli, and it was their captain Rajat Patidar, who had the honour of lifting the coveted trophy. This momentous occasion marked a defining chapter not only for the franchise but also for Virat Kohli, who, after 18 long and loyal years with the team, finally got his hands on the elusive IPL crown.
In one of the most poignant moments of the season, Kohli was overcome with emotion, dropping to his knees in tears as RCB's win was confirmed on the final ball. Having dedicated his entire IPL career to a single franchise – a rarity in the league – Kohli's lengthy and patient journey reached its triumphant conclusion. His teammates erupted in celebration around him, as one of the game's greatest icons added another significant achievement to his legendary career.
"This win is as much for the fans as it is for the team. It's been 18 long years. I've given this team my youth, prime and experience. I've tried to win it every season, gave it everything I have. To finally have it is an unbelievable feeling. Never thought this day would come, I was overcome with emotion after the last ball was bowled. Gave each and every ounce of my energy and it's an amazing feeling," Kohli said after the match," Kohli said at the post-match presentation.
"What ABD has done for the franchise is tremendous, told him 'this win is as much yours as it is ours. I want you to celebrate with us'. He's been the POTM most times in the franchise despite being retired for four years. Tells you the impact he's had on the league, team and me. He deserves to be on the podium, lifting the cup," he added.
Tears flowed freely down Virat Kohli's face as RCB finally ended their 18-year wait for an IPL title. Kohli's emotions overwhelmed him as Josh Hazlewood bowled the final delivery of the match, which Shashank Singh hit for a six. The moment the ball crossed the boundary, Kohli sank to the ground, unable to contain his tears. The entire RCB team immediately rushed towards their star player, embracing him in a heartfelt group hug. Rajat Patidar, Krunal Pandya, and Jitesh Sharma were among the first to join in the celebratory embrace of this special moment.
This IPL title triumph marked the culmination of a long and challenging journey for Virat Kohli. Since 2008, Kohli has been the undisputed face of RCB, experiencing the highs and the near misses of the finals in 2009, 2011, and 2016, along with periods of struggle that tested his unwavering resilience. Year after year, he returned to the team with the same unwavering passion and determination, always holding onto the hope that this day would eventually arrive. This achievement carries even greater significance due to the fact that Kohli has represented only one franchise throughout all 18 editions of the IPL.
