Washington Sundar notched his career-best bowling figures of 7/59 to limit New Zealand to just 259 runs in their first essay. New Zealand, despite a promising start of 197/3, collapsed to 259, losing their last 7 wickets for a mere 62 runs. Notably, Sundar wasn't initially part of India's squad for the Test series against New Zealand. However, after India's big defeat in the series opener in Bengaluru, BCCI added the star all-rounder in India's squad for the second and third Tests and their decision came to fruition with Sundar wreaking havoc on New Zealand batters in Pune.
New Zealand began the day with a promising start, spearheaded by Devon Conway's patient 76-run knock. Supported by Rachin Ravindra's steady 65, the Kiwi duo, along with Tom Blundell, looked poised to dominate the second session. Sundar's dream spell continued after the tea break. He delivered a crucial blow, trapping the in-form Daryl Mitchell LBW. Mitchell, who had been in exceptional form, was deceived by Sundar's flight and turn. With New Zealand reeling at 252/9, India exerted immense pressure, leaving the Kiwis on the brink of a significant collapse.
