Hardik Pandya suffered from an error by the third umpire after he was dismissed off Daryl Mitchell's bowling despite it looking like the bales had been dislodged

by the gloves of New Zealand's wicketkeeper-batter and stand-in skipper Tom Latham. In view of that cheeky wicket taken by Latham, India's own 'keeper Ishan Kishan tried to dismiss Latham in a similar fashion, despite the fact that Latham had made a connection with the ball. In the end, it was clear that Ishan was just mocking his Kiwi counterpart.

The incident took place in the fourth ball of the 16th over of the match, when Kuldeep Yadav was bowling and Latham was on 0 runs. He defended the ball quite well when Kishan touched the wickets with his gloves and appealed ferociously for the wicket. Latham also found the moment hilarious as he chuckled sheepishly and the Third Umpire saw the attempt and deemed it a not-out.

Earlier, Pandya was given out by the Third Umpire in a bizarre fashion in the 40th over of India’s innings. The all-rounder tried to play a cut too close to his body off Mitchell’s bowling and initially, it seemed like Pandya had chopped the ball onto the stumps. The Kiwi fielders appealed and the on-field umpire referred it to the third umpire KN Ananthapadmanabhan.
The replay clearly showed that the ball was a few inches above the stumps. The bail was removed by wicketkeeper Latham’s gloves. The third umpire checked the Ultraedge as well and there was no spike on it.

The 29-year-old reluctantly walked off the field disappointed by the umpire’s decision as the crowd at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium watched in disbelief. Pandya scored 28 runs from 38 deliveries including three fours, before his unlucky dismissal. He had shared a 74-run partnership for the fifth wicket with opener Shubman Gill who had scored his third century in the format.

In the end, opener Shubman Gill was the hero for India yet again, scoring a brilliant 208 runs as India scored 349 runs in their stipulated 50 overs.
