Wanindu Hasaranga becomes fastest player in the world to achieve this historic milestone in ODIs

Wanindu Hasaranga has consistently proven himself as a key player for Sri Lanka in One Day International (ODI) cricket. Renowned for his exceptional bowling skills, he also offers valuable contributions with the bat lower down the order. This was evident in the second ODI against Bangladesh, where Hasaranga showcased his prowess with a remarkable bowling spell of 3 wickets for 60 runs. His performance played a crucial role in Sri Lanka successfully bowling out the visiting Bangladeshi team for a total of 248 runs.

These three wickets increased Hasaranga's overall wicket count in ODIs to 106, achieved across 65 matches. Later in the same game, he also contributed with the bat, scoring 13 runs. This small but significant score allowed him to surpass the milestone of 1000 runs in his ODI career.

Although Hasaranga's innings didn't involve a large score, it was a significant one that allowed him to achieve a notable milestone. With this performance, Hasaranga etched his name into the record books by becoming the fastest player in ODI history to reach the double milestone of 1000 runs and 100 wickets.

Previously, the record for the quickest player to achieve the milestone of 1000 runs and 100 wickets in ODIs was held by South African legend Shaun Pollock, who accomplished this feat in 68 matches. Hasaranga, with his recent performance, has now surpassed this record, reaching the landmark in just his 65th One Day International game.

In the current series, Hasaranga has been Sri Lanka's leading wicket-taker, securing seven wickets across two matches. However, he is yet to fully demonstrate his batting capabilities in this particular series, suggesting there's still potential for him to contribute more significantly with the bat.

Despite Hasaranga's stellar bowling performance, Bangladesh managed to secure a victory against Sri Lanka, thereby leveling the series at 1-1. Hasaranga's efforts helped Sri Lanka restrict Bangladesh to a total of 248 runs. However, the Sri Lankan team faltered during their chase and ultimately lost the match by 16 runs. Kusal Mendis provided a promising start to the innings, scoring a quick 56 off just 31 balls at the top of the order. Unfortunately, the team then experienced a significant collapse, falling to 132 for 6. Janith Liyange then played a remarkable innings of 76, single-handedly bringing Sri Lanka close to the target. However, his dismissal in the 47th over marked the end of Sri Lanka's hopes of winning the match.
