India pacer Jasprit Bumrah was seen having a lengthy conversation with South Africa captain Temba Bavuma after the 30-run defeat at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Bavuma-led South Africa ended their Test win drought on Indian soil that lasted for a decade and a half. Earlier, on Day 1, Bumrah was heard on stump mic referring to Bavuma as ‘bauna (dwarf)’ while discussing with Rishabh Pant whether to opt DRS for a lbw or not. Bumrah faced flak on social media for his comment and seemed to be having a conversation with Bavuma to clear the air.
Bumrah faced just four balls and remained not out while India were bowled out for 93 in 35 overs, failing to chase down a target of 124.
On Day 3, Bavuma staged Proteas’ comeback with a gritty half-century. He shared a crucial 44-run partnership with Corbin Bosch. He turned out to be the only batter in the Test to score a half-century. This was Bavuma’s first Test half-century on Indian soil. He remained not out for 55 and helped South Africa post 153 from 54 overs in the their second innings.
Bavuma on crucial catch of Axar
India were set a target of 124. They missed the services of captain Shubman Gill who has been hospitalised. Bavuma used his bowlers well and took the crucial catch of Axar Patel who had hit Keshav Maharaj for two sixes in an over. In the post-match presentation, he talked about the catch.
“It wasn't easy. I'm just glad I got a hand to it. Crucial moment again. Axar, he had momentum on his side and we kind of know how the Indian batters play. When they have momentum, they go even harder. So fortunately, he was able to make a mistake. I was able to grab him with my small hands. Those are those moments that you want to be a part of. You don't want to give it to someone else. You want to be doing it for the team,” Bavuma said about the catch to dismiss Axar.
Next Test for Bavuma
Bavuma-led South Africa are currently placed second on the WTC points table. He will be seen in action in the second Test which is scheduled to start on November 22 at Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati.
