Former South Africa speedster Dale Steyn slammed India's stand-in captain, Rishabh Pant, for his reckless shot during Day 3 of the second Test match at Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati.
Pant's dismissal in 2nd Test vs South Africa
Pant, who is leading the side in Shubman Gill's absence, came to bat with India on 96/3 in the first session, and his team required him to lead from the front with a substantial knock.
However, the wicketkeeper-batter failed to change to momentum of the game after being dismissed while attempting to charge down the track against Marco Jansen and edging him to the wicketkeeper. Pant faced a lot of criticism for his shot selection.
Dale Steyn on Pant's batting
South Africa pace legend Dale Steyn questioned Pant’s overly aggressive intent, stating that the match could not be won in an over. He also described Pant’s shot as a “brainfade” moment on his X account.
“I just feel as a captain you need to apply yourself a little bit longer in a situation like this, where you are behind the eight ball. We've seen the way that Temba Bavuma has captained the team and other players have taken inspiration from that. It looked like a bad time. But as a captain you just need to lead a little bit better. You've been out in the field for 150 overs. You come out there with the bat. You're not going to win the game in an over. You're not going to win the game in a session. You have to take the game a little bit deeper and India just aren't able to do that. They weren’t led the way that they should be able to do that in that dismissal,” Steyn said on Star Sports.
India vs South Africa 2nd Test Day 3
Coming back to Day 3 of the second Test, South Africa's Marco Jansen picked up a six-wicket haul that helped the hosts to tighten their grip by bundling out India on 201 runs, where Yashasvi Jaiswal is the only batter who managed to score a half-century. After India's top order batting collapse, Kuldeep Yadav and Washington Sundar tried to shift the momentum of the game by stitching a 72-run stand for the eighth wicket before being dismissed.
