India Test captain Shubman Gill has been ruled out of the second Test match against South Africa, which is scheduled to take place from November 22 at the ACA Stadium in Guwahati. In his absence, Rishabh Pant, who was Gill's deputy, will lead India in the second Test of the Freedom Trophy 2025.
Gill sustained a neck injury while batting during the first innings of the second Test match in Kolkata and left the field midway. After leaving the field, the stylish batter was admitted to the hospital in Kolkata and ruled out of the rest of the Test match.
Gill doubtful for ODIs against South Africa
Sports Tak also understands that Shubman Gill might miss the three-match ODI series against South Africa as a precaution and rest, which is scheduled to take place from November 30.
BCCI on Shubman Gill's injury
A BCCI press release on Wednesday said that the 26-year-old would travel with the squad to Guwahati, and he will be monitored by the BCCI’s medical team.
“Team India captain Shubman Gill suffered a neck injury on Day 2 of the Kolkata Test against South Africa and was taken to the hospital for examination after the end of day’s play. He was kept under observation and discharged the next day. Shubman has been responding well to the medical treatment provided and will travel to Guwahati with the team on 19th November, 2025,“ the release said.
How did Shubman Gill get injured?
Gill suffered a serious neck spasm during the first Test against South Africa in Kolkata, which caused him to retire hurt on Day 2 after facing only three deliveries. The injury, sustained after playing a sweep shot, forced him to be taken to the hospital for observation, where he was diagnosed with a neck spasm and discharged a day later.
Nitish Kumar Reddy joined Indian squad
Indian fast-bowling all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy has reportedly joined the Indian squad in Kolkata before the second Test, and there are chances that he might feature in the second clash if Shubman Gill misses out.
