England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt has been officially ruled out of the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand after sustaining a minor tear in her left calf. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) characterized the decision as a precautionary measure, opting to prioritise her long-term availability.

Her fitness will be monitored closely ahead of the subsequent T20I series, which serves as a critical launchpad for England’s preparations for the home T20 World Cup scheduled for June.
Charlie Dean comes in a Brunt's replacement
In light of the captain's injury, vice-captain Charlie Dean has been recalled to the ODI squad. Dean was originally expected to sit out the series while rehabilitating a back stress fracture, but her return provides necessary leadership depth. Additionally, top-order batter Maia Bouchier has been added to the roster as injury cover to bolster the batting lineup in Sciver-Brunt’s absence.

The injury occurred during a midweek Metro Bank Cup fixture where Sciver-Brunt was representing The Blaze. Despite an impressive all-round performance, scoring 47 off 32 balls and claiming two wickets against Warwickshire, she reported discomfort following the match. Scans conducted on Saturday confirmed the calf tear, and the medical team has since prescribed a period of rest to ensure a full recovery.
Following the announcement of England’s T20 World Cup squad, the team participated in a specialized leadership program designed by the British Army. However, due to her recent calf injury, Nat Sciver-Brunt was unable to participate in the physical components of the training. While she missed the rigorous outdoor exercises, the program remains a key part of the squad's mental preparation ahead of a busy summer schedule.
These upcoming fixtures serve as a vital opportunity for the team to fine-tune their tactics and player combinations. The ultimate goal is to reach peak performance by June 12, when they officially launch their World Cup campaign against Sri Lanka at Edgbaston.
