Shubman Gill's fitness has been a big topic of discussion for the past few days. The India skipper had sustained a neck injury during the first Test against South Africa in Kolkata and had to undergo treatment at a hospital. With the 26-year-old not being able to bat during the Men in Blue's second innings, they failed to chase down a modest target of 124 and got bundled out for only 93 runs.
Gill skips training session, will take fitness test
Gill, who was showing signs of recovery, travelled with the team to Guwahati where the second Test will be taking place. According to a report by PTI, the batter didn't attend the practice session on Thursday and will be undergoing a fitness test on Friday, a day before the match gets underway. It remains to be seen if Gill will be able to participate in the second Test or if Rishabh Pant will be handed the leadership duties for the match in the former's place.
Meanwhile, Gill had played just three deliveries during the first Test against South Africa before he hurt his neck and was forced to retire hurt. He didn't take part in the remainder of the match and was instead taken to the hospital so that he can fully recover. Later, the BCCI had released a statement regarding Gill's fitness, stating that he has been responding well to the medical treatment and the decision over his participation in the second Test will be taken shortly.
"Team India captain Shubman Gill suffered a neck injury on Day 2 of the Kolkata Test against South Africa and was taken to the hospital for examination after the end of day's play. He was kept under observation and discharged the next day. Shubman has been responding well to the medical treatment provided and will travel to Guwahati with the team on 19th November, 2025. He will continue to be monitored by the BCCI medical team and a decision on his participation in the 2nd Test will be taken accordingly," the BCCI statement read.
India look to bounce back
Meanwhile, the second and final match of the series between India and South Africa will commence from November 22. With the Proteas having a 1-0 lead, it will be essential for the Men in Blue to win this game in order to avoid a second Test series defeat at home under Gautam Gambhir's guidance.
