Former India cricketer Manoj Tiwary was critical of the BCCI selectors for not including Mohammed Shami into the squad despite his impressive performances for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy. The veteran pacer was snubbed entirely from the multi-format series against South Africa. Tiwary feels that the selectors do not completely trust Shami to do the job on the international stage.
“There seems to be a lack of trust and understanding within the team circle. Mohammed Shami has taken wickets consistently for Bengal, but he wasn’t selected for Tests or even the ODIs in Australia," Tiwary told India Today.
Tiwary also feels that there is lack of communication between the selectors and Shami and added that either they or the coach should talk to him and let him know about their decision. He also highlighted how Shami is a senior player, who has contributed to the team for years.
“Selectors said there was no fitness update. But whose job is that? Trainers and physios should provide updates. At least pick up the phone and ask the player. He is a senior player who has contributed for years—you can at least call him. That’s the responsibility of the coach and selection committee," Shami stated.
Shami has been out of the Indian team for months
Shami's last apperance for India came during the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy final against New Zealand in March. Despite finishing as the side's joint-highest wicket-taker with Varun Chakravarthy, the 35-year-old wasn't considered for any future assignments. He was expected to mjake his Test return for the Men in Blue during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England, but that didn't happen either as there were concerns regarding his fitness during that time.
Shami shines for Bengal in Ranji
Meanwhile, Shami has been a key player for Bengal so far in the Ranji Trophy. He has so far picked up a total of 20 wickets in the four games he was played for the team and has proved to be a big headache for the opposing batters. It remains to be seen if he will be able to keep up this form and earn a call-up to the Indian team.
