Indian Test team under the leadership of Rohit Sharma will take on Sri Lanka in the second Test match of the series, scheduled to be played in Bengaluru. The pink-ball Test is slated to start on March 12.


Test match in Bengaluru

It is important to mention that at this particular stadium, both the teams had faced each other only in one Test match, back in 1994. That Test match had taken place from January 26 to January 30 and the Indian team managed to secure a comfortable victory by an innings and 95 runs. Now it is time to recall that Test match.


Batting first, the Mohammad Azharuddin-led Indian team had registered a total of 541/6 (declared). Indian opening batter Navjot Sidhu (99 runs off 228 balls), Vinod Kambli (82 runs off 132 balls) and Sachin Tendulkar (96 runs off 140 deliveries) earned a solid start for the hosts. Later, skipper Azharuddin played a brilliant innings to notch his century (108 runs off 217 balls).


Sri Lanka spinner Muthiah Muralidaran had picked up four wickets in that Test match.


Poor batting display

In reply, the visitors were bundled out within a paltry total of 231 runs in 58.1 overs. Ruwan Kalpage turned out to be his side’s highest run-scorer in the first innings as he scored 63 runs off 99 balls.


For India, Manoj Prabhakar bagged four wickets and Kapil Dev had claimed three wickets in first innings.


Sri Lanka were asked to follow on but things did not turn out to be any different as the visitors could manage to reach a total of 215 runs and eventually lose the contest by an innings and 95 runs. Sri Lanka batsman Hashan Tilakaratne scored 80 runs off 118 balls in second innings and he appeared to be the highest scorer of his side.


Indian spinner Anil Kumble had picked up three wickets in the second innings as Kapil Dev, Venkatapathy Raju and Rajesh Chauhan bagged two wickets each.


It is important to mention that, Indian team have played in 26 Test matches at Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium and out of these 23 Test matches the hosts secured to win 8 Test matches and 9 Test matches resulted in draw. In the remaining 6 Test matches Indian team had to concede defeat.
