Umesh Yadav to play as guest player for this Ranji team after parting ways with Vidarbha

Seeking regular game time across all formats after parting ways with long-time side Vidarbha, India's veteran but out-of-favour pacer Umesh Yadav has signed on with Punjab as a guest player for the upcoming domestic season. Out of the national selection frame for some time, the 38-year-old was searching for a setup that could offer him consistent opportunities in every format, a role Punjab was eager to provide to bolster their bowling department.

Umesh brings a wealth of top-tier experience to Punjab's relatively young squad, having spearheaded India's Test pace battery for over a decade. Throughout an impressive international career spanning all three formats, he amassed 170 Test wickets in 57 appearances, alongside 106 ODI and 12 T20I scalps. His ability to spearhead the attack, bowl with high pace, and extract movement with the new ball provides crucial depth to Punjab’s lineup, especially in red-ball cricket, while giving their emerging fast bowlers an invaluable mentor to learn from on the field.

Why did Punjab sign Umesh Yadav?

Driven by a desire to plug a glaring gap in their fast-bowling department, Punjab resorted to turning to Umesh for the upcoming domestic campaign. State regulars Arshdeep Singh and Gurnoor Brar are expected to be tied up with national commitments, leaving Punjab's attack severely depleted in red-ball cricket. Recognising that this void needed an elite fix, the management secured a No-Objection Certificate from the Vidarbha Cricket Association to bring the veteran on board. This signing marks a major precedent for the Punjab Cricket Association, making Yadav the first out-of-state guest player ever recruited in the team's history. Punjab’s decision stems from a determination to end a frustrating 34-year Ranji Trophy drought that stretches back to their last championship triumph in 1992. PCA President Amarjit Mehta highlighted Yadav's proven track record, which includes multiple Ranji titles with Vidarbha and a distinguished international career with India, as the cornerstone for building a championship-caliber squad for the 2026–27 season. Beyond his on-field impact, Yadav's arrival is meant to reshape the culture in the dressing room. Mehta emphasized that the 38-year-old's extensive experience will serve as an invaluable learning resource for the squad's developing fast bowlers. With key front-line quicks away on international duty, Yadav is set to anchor the red-ball attack while mentoring the next generation, providing both immediate firepower and long-term value to Punjab’s title ambitions.
