Temba Bavuma-led South Africa cricket team defeated Dhananjaya de Silva's Sri Lanka side in the second and final Test of the series which was being played at St George's Park in Gqeberha, on December 9 (Monday). Proteas have cleaned sweeped the Lankan Lions and won the series 2-0. Dane Paterson and Keshab Maharaj took 7 wickets each and both of them also picked a fifer in the clash against SL.
Ryan Rickelton and Kyle Verreynne's tons
SA lost their three wickets on the score of 44 runs in the first innings at one point before Ryan Rickelton and Temba Bavuma's 133-run stand revived their side. However, Bavuma got out after scoring 78 runs but Rickelton completed his century and took the team in a good position. He batted for 250 balls and held one end firm before getting out on 101 runs. The other great knock came at the hands of Kyle Verreynne, who ensured that SA will have a massive target on the board. Kyle remained unbeaten in the first innings with 105 runs to his name and helped SA post 358 runs on the board. Lahiru Kumara picked four wickets and Asitha Fernando took three. Meanwhile, Vishwa Fernando settled with 2 and Jayasuriya just got one.
Decent fightback from SL
Sri Lanka put up a good fight in the first innings as they scored 328 runs in response to SA's 358 in the first innings. Pathum Nissanka smashed a stunning 89-run knock and got support from crucial cameos of Dinesh Chandimal (44 off 97), Angelo Mathews (44 off 90), and Kamindu Mendis (48 off 92). However, it was Dane Paterson's fifer that ensured Proteas would enjoy a 30-run lead despite SL's performance. Keshav Maharaj and Marco Jansen took two wickets each and Kagiso Rabada settled with one.
SA put another great performance with bat
Fifties from Aiden Markram and Temba Bavuma along with good cameos Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs, and Bedingham helped Proteas post 317 runs on the scoreboard and added a 30-run lead to the 317 score, Lankan Lions had a big target of 348 runs in front of them.
Sri Lanka's fourth innings saw some good knocks but none of them could turn them big enough to turn the tables on the Proteas. Captain Dhananjaya de Silva's 50 was the highest individual score from the Sri Lankan side in the final innings. Keshav Maharaj's fifer ensured that Proteas win this match by 109 runs and win the series 2-0.
