Andrew Flintoff quits England Lions role ahead of Sydney Thunder stint

In a series of interesting updates, former England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff has brought his stint with the England Lions to an end after deciding to leave his position as head coach. Having taken charge of the duties in September 2024, Flintoff spent close to two years working with the emerging talents.

During his time, he helped introduce big changes in the Lions setup, with a strong focus on preparing promising cricketers and coaches for future roles within England's senior system. With his exit, he will prepare himself for another challenge, as he is set to take over the head coach role of Sydney Thunders in Australia's Big Bash League.

On leaving, the former England international expressed that he had immense pleasure in working with some of the best young talents in the country, but now its time to move on and look for another challenge.

"Unfortunately I’ve made the decision to step away from my role with the Lions. Not only have I enjoyed my time having the opportunity to work with the best young cricketers in the country, but have taken great pride in seeing them develop," said Flintoff in a statement.

While continuing, Flintoff expressed his gratitude towards everyone who helped him during his stint with England Lions especially ECB director Rob Key, who trusted him with the role.

"I’d like to thank the coaches and staff for all their passion, tireless work and support they give everyday. In particular, Ed Barney who I’ve loved working with and was so lucky to have as a performance director, and obviously Rob (Key) for trusting me with one of the most important roles in English cricket," added Flintoff.

Mike Yardy to take charge

Flintoff's decision to move on comes not long after England men's managing director Rob Key praised the work done by him with the England Lions. Attention will now turn to the Lions' upcoming four-day game against Pakistan Men at Beckenham, where they will represent a professional County Club Select XI from August 12. With Flintoff no longer in charge, England Under-19 head coach Mike Yardy has been given the duties for leading the team in the fixture.
