India's captain Suryakumar Yadav (R) looks at the pitch as he interacts with head coach Gautam Gambhir (L) and chairman of the selection committee Ajit Agarkar during the training session on the eve of the 2026 ICC Men's T20 World Cup final.

Story Highlights:

Ajit Agarkar has been credited for his handling of transition.

BCCI is likely to talk to Agarkar on sidelines of IPL games.

India men's senior selection committee chief Ajit Agarkar is likely to get an extension on his contract which was scheduled to expire in June 2026.

As per a report by the Indian Express, Agarkar will hold his position till June 2027. Since Agarkar took over, India have won two T20 World Cup titles, ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and the T20 Asia Cup 2025. India also reached the ODI World Cup 2023 final with Agarkar as chief selector. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is highly likely to keep Agarkar till the ODI World Cup 2027 on South Africa.

“Under Agarkar’s tenure, the team had a seamless transition and was fearless in taking bold decisions. The board felt he should continue. The BCCI officer bearers will be speaking to him on the sidelines of IPL games to update him,” a BCCI official told the English daily.

Agarkar has been credited for dealing with the transition when Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma retired from T20Is and Tests. In addition Ravichandran Ashwin announced his retirement from international cricket. Agarkar also picked Shubman Gill (Tests and ODIs) and Suryakumar (T20Is) as captains.

Tough Gill call

The former India pacer has also been known to take tough calls. Before the T20 World Cup 2026, the selection committee headed by Agarkar dropped vice-captain Shubman Gill from T20I squad and brought back Ishan Kishan on the basis of performance in domestic cricket. He got the backing of new selectors RP Singh and Pragyan Ojha as well.

Test team goes through rough patch

However, the Test team continues to struggle in the last few years having suffered series losses at home to New Zealand and South Africa. India failed to make it to the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 final whereas the qualification for the 2027 final looks like an uphill task as well.

Shami’s absence only mystery in Agarkar’s tenure

The only question which has followed Agarkar during his tenure is Mohammed Shami’s absence across formats after ICC Champions Trophy 2025 triumph. Fitness issues were cited but Shami has proved his mettle in domestic cricket across formats. He has been in good form in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) as well. It will be interesting to see if Shami continues to get ignored during Agarkar’s tenure after the IPL 2026.
